  4. ░  1.  Enter the number of characters without commas.        
  5. ░                                                            
  6. ░  2.  If the number of characters is unknown, enter 0.      
  7. ░      The cursor will jump to the next question, number     
  8. ░      of pages.  If a number other than 0 is entered for    
  9. ░      characters, the cursor will skip to point size.       
  10. ░                                                            
  11. ░  3.  Enter the point size.  This is the size of the type-  
  12. ░      set character expressed in points (a measure of 72    
  13. ░      points to the inch). Type is measured from the top    
  14. ░      of an ascender (or capital letter) to the bottom of   
  15. ░      a descender (e.g., a lower case y). Half point sizes  
  16. ░      are allowed by ALPHACALC.

  18. █ 4.  Enter the leading.  Effectively, this measure is the   
  19. ░      space between lines; the value expressed represents   
  20. ░      the total of the point size plus the additional       
  21. ░      space. For example, 9 point type on 10 point leading  
  22. ▒      shows one point of extra space between the lines.     
  23. ▒      It is calculated by measuring from the baseline of    
  24. ░      one line of type to the baseline of the next line.

  53. ░  5.  Enter the column width.  Enter the number of picas    
  54. ░      for the width of one column.  ALPHACALC will accept   
  55. ░      picas and points. Do not enter partial picas in base  
  56. ░      ten decimals. Enter as points. There are 12 points    
  57. ░      in a pica. (20 and 1/2 picas would be 20 picas 6      
  58. ░      points 20 and one third would be 20 picas 4 points).

  60. ░  6.  Enter characters per pica.  Use values from the       
  61. ░      font specifications from your typesetter or from      
  62. ▒      the typeface manufacturer.  Or you may use the        
  63. ▒      guide supplied at the right of the screen.  Three     
  64. ░      typeface width values are shown.  As examples, Hel-   
  65. ░      vetica has a set width common to the larger type-     
  66. ░      faces.  The values for Times Roman represent the      
  67. ░      middle range.  Garamond #3 is an example of a small   
  68. █      typeface.
